The new agreement was signed in February and builds on the collaboration that began between the two companies at the beginning of 2023. The parties will now drive several joint research projects to further develop the product concept and test them in various construction projects to strengthen its role in future sustainable community building.
"The collaboration is important, not only for us and Boliden, but for the entire concrete industry. We need sustainable alternatives and with our combined expertise and proximity – both geographically and culturally – we see great opportunities to make a difference," says Lennart Björnström, COO at Thomas Concrete Group.
Energy-efficient binder with great potential
The alternative binder is both energy-efficient and locally produced in Skellefteå, which reduces the climate impact from long transports.
"We see great potential in developing the product concept into a climate-smart overall solution that can contribute to the construction industry's transition and the goal of climate-neutral concrete," says Lennart Björnström.
"In order to develop the industry's resource utilization, collaboration is needed. We therefore have high hopes for continued development and the new agreement with Thomas Concrete Group gives us further assurance that we are on the right track," says Åke Roos, product manager at Boliden.
An important part of the new research collaboration is to work towards the new binder gaining an established place in Swedish concrete standards.
