Boliden offers excellent opportunities for development at work
Boliden, a responsible pioneer in the mining and metal processing industry, employs around 6,000 experts in the Nordic countries and Ireland. Process engineer Sauli Rytkönen feels that the company constantly has interesting challenges.
Boliden has ore exploration, several of its own mines and smelters. The group is particularly known for its strong responsibility work. According to process engineer Sauli Rytkönen, who is involved in Boliden's international trainee program, this is one of the company's key strengths.
"Companies must pay more and more attention to CO2 emissions. Boliden is able to produce low-emission metals needed for the green transition and create the conditions for low-carbon further processing products that are made from Boliden's metals."
Rytkönen got to know Boliden's operations already during his studies, when in 2020 he started as a summer employee in Boliden Harjavalta and continued working there later alongside his studies. At the beginning of 2021, Boliden Kevitsa multi-metal mine also became familiar to Sauli.
"I got such a good feeling about the company that at the end of 2022 I applied to the international trainee program and through that I was able to work in Garpenberg mine, Sweden. This spring, I completed an internship at Boliden Kokkola zinc plant."
"At the moment, I work at a concentrator and my desk has, for example, daily process monitoring and short-term development work. I have been able to see operations in both Finland and Sweden, and I think Boliden's values of care, courage and responsibility are well realized in the group's various locations."
Learning something new is exciting
Rytkönen was attracted to Boliden by the company's active approach and interest in offering students opportunities.
"I see that at Boliden you can influence what you want to do and get challenges if you want. In a large group, you can also interact between locations and develop things through cooperation."
For Rytkönen, the best part of the job so far has been constant learning. Processes learned in theory gain a new meaning in real work and reveal their complexity.
"What makes my work interesting is the interaction with the production staff working in the field. At work, you have to understand that they have the best vision and experience of doing the work itself."
Nice team spirit and lots of opportunities
Rytkönen also praises the positive atmosphere of the working community. The orientations work well and the supervisors are helpful.
"You can quickly become a team member, even if you only come to work for a short assignment."
Boliden strongly invests in younger and more experienced professionals finding their place in the company. Every year, Boliden sites recruit a large number of summer employees for very different positions, from production operators to research assistants. In addition to summer jobs, the sites conduct numerous master's and thesis projects every year.
"For both recent graduates and more experienced ones, the sites also constantly offer interesting positions in many different fields, both as engineers, geologists and, for example, as HR and finance professionals."
Rytkönen himself recommends boldly applying for a job at Boliden.
"Even in Finland, the company has around 1,700 employees, and in a large company, the comfort of the employees is well taken care of. Working life and the rest of everyday life can be reconciled so that people are comfortable and able to work."
