Major zinc and zinc alloy producer

The Odda zinc smelter, established back in the 1920s, is beautifully located right next to Sorfjorden in western Norway. The primary raw materials are zinc concentrates for zinc production. The secondary raw material is recycled zinc. The annual production capacity is currently 200 ktonnes of zinc. However, investments are underway to reach 350 ktonnes of zinc. The zinc production in Odda are amongst the most climate effective in the world.

The construction and infrastructure industries are the largest users of zinc, but the automotive, transport, electrical and electrical consumer goods industries are also important areas of use for zinc.

Whether zinc is used in construction materials or coatings for other materials, it is highly recyclable.

Boliden prioritizes internal solutions for hazardous process waste management. As part of a comprehensive and systematic environmental effort, the first bedrock repository was built in Odda in 1986 for the disposal of jarosite (iron process waste).

Today, stabilized mercury and sulphur waste is also stored here along with lead/iron matte from the lead smelting plant in Bergsöe. During 2014, the rock repository at Odda was extended with a further two rock cavities for jarosite.
